As we dive into Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, Māori Language Week, we are excited to share the rich meaning behind our Hā Tools, which are deeply rooted in the beauty of Māori culture and tradition.
Hā & Taonga Pūoro: Connecting to Our Roots
Our connection to Hā is deeply rooted in our pūrākau, the stories of Hineahuone and Tāne who breathed life into her. From these ancient tales, our Hā Tools find inspiration in taonga pūoro, a family of musical instruments that includes the kōauau and the tapering form of the pūtōrino.
In Te Ara, it is beautifully explained that taonga pūoro are seen as the offspring of the families of the gods who brought them into existence. 'Rangi,' which translates to tunes, pays homage to the primal Sky Father, to whom music rises like an offering. The rhythmic heartbeats of Papatūānuku, the Earth Mother, provide the heartbeat for musical rhythms.
The Hā Tool, at its core, supports daily breathing habits that enhance our well-being and foster self-awareness. It empowers us to access our parasympathetic nervous system, enabling quicker shifts in our emotional states. What makes the Hā Tool truly unique and special to us as Māori is that it serves as a reminder of our whakapapa, our genealogy, and our connection to wairua, the spiritual world. It reminds us that we are never alone on this journey, with our tipuna (ancestors) always there to guide and support us.
The Classic Hā Tool: A Symbol of Life's Brilliance
The Classic Hā Tool takes its inspiration from the graceful form of taonga pūoro, adding a unique faceted effect that elevates its beauty, just as a diamond's multiple facets enhance its brilliance. In much the same way, life combines moments of radiance with challenges, allowing us to grow stronger and wiser through adversity. Like the sparkle of a diamond, our resilience shines even brighter amidst life's imperfections. Let’s aim to embrace all facets of life.
The Koru Hā Tool: A Symbol of New Beginnings
The Koru Hā Tool takes its name from "koru," which means loop or coil, representing the unfurling frond that symbolises new life, renewal, and hope for the future. Within this tool, you'll discover a larger shape known as Mangōpare, resembling a hammerhead shark. This emblem embodies strength, courage, and power. As we make an effort to connect to hā, always remember to be gentle on ourselves, and know that every day we have the power and strength to start again.
Embrace Our Māori Heritage
As we celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, we encourage you to embrace the rich Māori culture that inspires our Hā Tools. These tools not only hold cultural importance but also serve as a reminder that, like a diamond, our lives are made more beautiful by the various facets, including both challenges and triumphs. Let's cherish and honor our unique identities and heritage during this special week. Thank you for being a part of our journey in embracing Māori culture and promoting well-being. We hope you find inspiration in the beauty and meaning of our Hā Tools.
